ISTD Ballet

The Imperial Society of Dance Teachers was formed in 1904 in Covent Garden, London and in 1924 the foundations of the present structure of the ISTD was established with the formation of different Faculties. Currently the ISTD has more than 7,500 members in over 50 countries throughout the world and holds 250,000 examinations each year.

The syllabi starts with ballet classes for children from 6 years and follows a progression

through to the professional and teaching exams.

The roots of Imperial Classical Ballet stem from the early days of the ISTD and the first written syllabus in 1913 which was based on the teaching of the French School from the Paris Opéra. The syllabus has now evolved to promote the English classical style and address the changing needs of Ballet dancers today.

Spanish Dance – Flamenco

Alianza Flamenca was founded in Johannesburg in 1994 by a group of experienced flamenco dance teachers who found there was a need for  specialized flamenco dance classes in South Africa.

The Syllabus Coordination Committee designed a syllabus to provide pupils with a sound

knowledge of Flamenco rhythms, styles and techniques.

In 1995, the syllabus was launched in South Africa and Greece. Over the years Alianza Flamenca has invited various world-renowned maestros, such as Manolo Marin, La Tati, Carmella Greco, La Truco, Domingo Ortega and Leonor Leal to conduct Easter Seminars and inspire students and young teachers of flamenco. Alianza has staged various productions and hold teacher's courses to enhance the standard of teaching within the association.

ISTD Tap Dance

   Tap evolved as an American dance form, popularised throughout the world, with debate about its origins coming from African dance, Irish dance and/or clog dancing.  Tap dance is a theatrical art form often seen on stage in musicals but in  an ever-changing creative industry, Tap is receiving a facelift. From the icons of old a new generation is pushing boundaries in style and rhythmical intricacies.
